The need to cut carbon emissions in line with government targets, but without compromising on comfort conditions and occupant health & well-being has presented our sector with considerable technical challenges.
The latest revisions of the Building Regulations, which came into effect in June, demonstrated the fine balancing act our industry must achieve.
The country needs buildings that are resilient to the effects of climate change, but which also cut into the 40% of total carbon emissions that are the responsibility of the built environment. At the same time, they must also be capable of keeping people safe, productive, and healthy in the short, medium and long term.
While the regulations were never going to be perfect, the government still deserves considerable credit for taking on board many of the lessons learned about indoor conditions during the pandemic and balancing those with the need to keep working towards net zero.
Setting these occupant health and well-being considerations alongside new heating requirements, such as the need for all heat emitters to be designed to work with low temperature sources to make all buildings ‘zero carbon ready’ in preparation for the 2025 Future Homes Standard, puts the overall technical challenge into a broader context.
It also brings many of the recent advancements in heating and cooling technologies into play and particularly highlights the growing role to be played by heat pumps – as a source of low temperature/low carbon heating and cooling.
At Swegon, we have introduced refrigerant R290 (propane) into several of our product ranges, offering a ‘near zero’ global warming potential (GWP) of 3, and a more sustainable solution than traditional refrigerants.
Our new GEYSER SKY Hi HP R0 is capable of a seasonal coefficient of performance (COP) of 4.8, which is 40% better than that stipulated by the European Energy Related Products (ERP) directive.
The Eurovent-certified product is optimised for heating production, managing loads from 4 to 31kW and boasts hot water production up to 78degC when the outside temperature is 5degC and above or 60degC at -20degC. In cooling mode, it will still operate with ambient temperatures as low as -10degC and as high as 45degC.
Geyser SKY is ideal for residential and light commercial applications. It provides smart defrost and anti-legionella cycles along with DHW production through an integrated 3-way water flow system. It is equipped with our Blue Think technology and has built-in connectivity for the latest in controls sophistication.
Because it uses R290, the heat pump is equipped with dedicated leak detection and air extraction for safety. It also has several optional extras available to provide very low noise operation making it suitable for a wide range of applications
.
With so much change in the industry, it is important for manufacturers like Swegon to be able to balance the various technical challenges in this way. Fortunately, we already have many of the hardware and software tools we need to make sure we keep driving down emissions without compromising our fundamental goal of delivering healthier and safer buildings.
