For this reason, it remains our bestselling installation method. Details on compatible constructions can be found in the Declaration of Performance, while installation instructions are provided in the IO&M and installation drawings. Based on common technical queries, here are five important points to keep in mind when installing the DWFX-F: **1. Drop Rods** While drop rods are optional, when required, only a fixing nut should be placed beneath the cleat. Adding a second fixing nut above the cleat can cause the drop rod to expand under fire conditions, exerting downward force on the damper and potentially dislodging it from the wall.   However, due to the varying number and nature of substrates into which the drop rods may be fixed, such as concrete, steel, or composite decking, the selected fixing method must be appropriate to the material and its load-bearing capacity. Where uncertainty exists regarding the suitability of the fixing, or where specialist anchors are required, consultation with a qualified fixing specialist is recommended to ensure compliance with both structural and fire safety requirements.   Equally, in situations where direct access to the soffit is obstructed by services, ceiling systems, or other structural elements, an alternative means of support must be provided. This must be appropriately engineered and approved by the project’s structural engineer to ensure it provides equivalent restraint and does not compromise the tested performance of the damper assembly.   **2. Fixing Screw Position** The flanges are left undrilled to allow flexibility in screw placement, ensuring alignment with the stud and track. As a best practice, maintain a distance of at least 1.5 times the screw diameter from the edge of the flange. Placing screws too close to the edge risks splitting the steel, which may indicate an incorrect damper opening size. Follow the maximum fixing hole spacing specified in the installation drawing. While additional fixings can be added to reduce spacing, exceeding the maximum spacing is not permitted. **3. Sealant Around the Flange Perimeter** If required, use a low-pressure intumescent acrylic sealant to seal the joint between the flange edge and the supporting construction. High-pressure intumescent sealants must not be used.   **4. Fixing Screws for Rigid Wall** Under the Direct Field of Application rules in EN1366-2:2015 it states: *Test results obtained with dampers installed in flexible vertical supporting constructions may be applied to rigid supporting constructions of a thickness equal to or greater than that of the element used in the tests, provided that the classified fire resistance of the rigid supporting construction is greater than or equal to the one used for the test. The sealants used shall be the same as those tested. Any fasteners used shall be fire rated to suit the supporting construction that is used.* Minimum specification for diameter and length is included in the installation instructions, but if you are unsure what fasteners are appropriate to the supporting construction that is being used, either contact the faster specialist on the project, or seek advice from a competent faster supplier. **5. Remove The Fixing Instructions! ** All the dampers are currently supplied with a paper copy of the IO&M attached to the flange in a document envelope. Please remove them before fitting the damper! This small but vital step is often missed. Paper left in situ can obstruct airflow or introduce a fire load, so always remove documentation before final installation.   **In Summary** Every detail in the DWFX-F installation process is based on rigorous testing and real-world fire safety requirements. By following these five considerations and the full IO&M guidance, installers can ensure a safe, compliant and long-lasting result. It’s also important to remember that fire damper installations are not one-size-fits-all. The DWFX-F’s design offers excellent adaptability, but that flexibility only translates into safety when paired with proper installation techniques. Ongoing training, access to up-to-date documentation, and early coordination with structural and fire safety teams can all help prevent installation errors and ensure compliance. When in doubt, always refer to the Declaration of Performance, installation drawings and the IO&M. With attention to detail and the right expertise, the DWFX-F can deliver reliable protection in even the most complex building environments.
