Mais d’autres bruits peuvent avoir des impacts négatifs sur notre santé. L'exposition à des niveaux sonores élevés sans protection auditive est évidemment nocive. Il suffit d'assister à un concert de rock pour s’en rendre compte. Toutefois, cette exposition ne dure généralement pas trop longtemps…** En revanche, nos environnements artificiels - foyers et lieux de travail - sont remplis de toutes sortes d’équipements et de machines qui produisent des sons monotones. C’est précisément ces sons là auxquels nous sommes exposés chaque jour, qui sont les plus difficiles à éviter, les plus perceptibles et les plus intrusifs. Il a été démontré par ailleurs que dans un espace clos, les bruits provenant de sources telles que les équipements CVC entrave la productivité, la concentration, la rétention de la mémoire et le calcul mental chez les écoliers, les étudiants universitaires ou chez les employés.    **Éliminer l’émission du bruit directement à sa source** Tous les équipements de génie climatique génèrent des nuisances sonores... et le réseau de ventilation est bien malgré lui un conduit idéal pour la transmission du son… La source sonore la plus importante demeure le ventilateur d’une unité de ventilation ou de traitement d’air. Les bruits rayonnent principalement par le biais des diffuseurs. La circulation de l’air, quant à elle, peut également devenir gênante bien que son bruit est généralement moins audible…  Tous les cas, la conception du réseau des gaines (avec le moins de pertes de charges possible) et le choix de l’équipement de ventilation et de traitement d’air sont des solutions pour palier à notre problème : en effet, le type de ventilateur, la vitesse de rotation et le rendement du ventilateur influent sur la production de bruit. Les fabricants ont la responsabilité de spécifier clairement dans les fiches techniques de leurs produits les niveaux de puissance acoustique rayonnée, tant celui vers les pièces que celui dans les conduits. L’utilisation de silencieux, de pièges à sons et le choix des diffuseurs, produisant le moins de nuisances sonores, sont également des solutions évidentes. Mais dans tous les cas, la voie à suivre passe par un travail d’équipe, en collaboration avec des fabricants responsables qui peuvent fournir conseils, produits et solutions appropriés selon le type d’application. Le défi réside à concevoir des systèmes CVC qui minimisent la génération de ces sons monotones en général – ce qui est bien sûr plus facile si le système est constitué de composants qui éliminent le bruit directement à la source.
