In their 14th year, the Constructing Excellence National Awards 2020 headed online. The awards were a great opportunity for companies to be seen as proactively supporting and leading innovative approaches within the construction and built environment sectors.
As headline sponsors, Swegon championed the leading members within the construction and built environment industry who supported and lead with innovative approaches throughout their sector.
On the 29th January 2021, the virtual awards were available to watch online via Zoom, with the finalists in each category going head to head with online presentations, with the final decision being made by the respective judges.
As well as being the awards’ headline Sponsor, we were category sponsors of the Building Project of the Year, with finalists including a cancer center, a hotel, student accommodation and more, as well as sponsoring the Civils Project of the Year Category featuring projects such as a surf pool, pier and bridge. We'd like to give our congratulations to the winners of both our sponsored categories.
Building Project of the Year
Mid Group, London Borough of Barking & Dagenham, Bond Bryan, Price & Myers, EDP, O’Keefes, Innovare, Greenside Integrated Services for Lymington Fields School.
The Constructing Excellence 2020’s Building Project of the Year went to a project that was handed over 7 months ahead of programme in just 15 months.
The adoption of Manufacturing Led Construction approach allowed the project to go ahead at a vastly reduced cost saving of £9m against market tenders, resulting in savings of c.£3.5m on prelims alone. This took the project from being unaffordable to deliverable.
The finished building is highly sustainable and future proofed, with no heating system, but comfort cooling provided throughout, as overheating is a real issue in schools, especially this one being the largest in Europe, accommodating 4,000 pupils when fully occupied.
Civils Project of the Year
Royal HaskoningDHV, Northumberland County Council, Balfour Beatty for Seahouses Main Pier.
The Constructing Excellence 2020’s Civils Project of the Year required an environmentally sensitive design and appropriate construction methods for works within a highly designated marine environment. Added challenges included a fixed deadline, specified by overwintering birds, as well as the safe marshalling of 150,000 visitors annually though the site works area.
The completed project protects 165 properties from coastal erosion and sea flooding risk. The scheme also sustains the harbour and so prevents loss to the local economy by safeguarding jobs associated with the fishing and tourist industries.
The project team worked closely, using innovative construction techniques to reduce the overall scheme costs to affordable levels realising £380k savings.
"Even in these unprecedented times, we are extremely pleased to see innovative construction projects going ahead, and are glad to be the headline sponsor of these awards that champion the leading approaches within our industry. We are really looking forward to seeing who wins in each of the categories. It certainly is tough competition this year!" - Robin Vollert, MD, Swegon UK&I
With over 500 attendees, the virtual awards enabled people to tune in from anywhere. It was a great opportunity to bring together those in our industry making tangible different, even under the difficult circumstances.
Congratulations to all the winners!
