This may be through a simple analogue signal or through a digital protocol, depending on the building strategy. Control compatibility should be confirmed early, particularly where the project has a specified BMS or room control platform. Questions to ask include: - Is analogue control sufficient? - Is BMS integration required? - Which communication protocol is specified? - Does the client need airflow values visible at BMS level? - Are alarms, diagnostics or status feedback required? - Who is responsible for controls integration? - Is future analytics or optimisation planned? A damper may be suitable mechanically but still cause issues if it does not align with the controls package. **Commissioning** Commissioning is often where specification decisions are tested. A VAV damper should be easy to access, set, read and verify on site. If commissioning engineers cannot easily check airflow values or adjust settings, the process becomes slower and the risk of incorrect operation increases. Consultants should ask: - Can Vmin and Vmax be set easily? - Can actual airflow be read on site? - Is the damper accessible after installation? - Is the display or controller visible? - Can the BMS verify damper position or airflow? - Are settings clearly documented? - Is a hand-held tool required? The available pressure differential needs to be high enough for the damper to measure and regulate airflow accurately. However, excessive pressure can increase energy consumption and generate unwanted noise. Consultants should consider: - The minimum pressure drop required for stable airflow control - The maximum expected pressure across the damper - Air velocity through the unit - Interaction with the fan pressure-control strategy - Regenerated and duct-borne noise - The damper’s location relative to occupied spaces - Room noise criteria - Whether attenuation may be required Correct sizing is critical. An undersized damper may experience high air velocities and pressure drops, increasing the risk of noise. An oversized damper may not provide accurate control at lower airflow rates. The selected unit should therefore operate effectively across the specified Vmin and Vmax range while remaining within the project’s acoustic limits. Swegon’s REACT V is pressure-independent and has a recommended working range from a minimum pressure drop of 10 Pa up to 300 Pa across the damper. Even when a damper can operate across a wide pressure range, the system should not maintain more pressure than necessary. Coordinating damper selection with duct design and demand-based fan pressure control can help improve airflow stability, reduce noise and limit unnecessary fan energy use. In acoustically sensitive spaces, such as offices, classrooms, healthcare environments and hotel bedrooms, consultants should review both the sound generated by the damper and the sound transmitted through the ductwork. Where required, attenuators should be selected using project-specific acoustic calculations rather than applied as a general remedy. Pressure and noise should therefore be assessed together. A well-designed system should provide sufficient pressure for accurate airflow regulation without creating excessive velocity, energy use or acoustic disturbance. Consultants need to consider airflow range, pressure conditions, control protocol, installation constraints, acoustics, commissioning access and long-term operation. By addressing these points early in the design process, project teams can reduce risk, simplify commissioning and help ensure the ventilation system delivers the intended comfort and energy performance.
