# User experience is reshaping how air handling unit performance is defined

User experience is reshaping how air handling unit performance is defined

6:48

**An air handling unit (AHU) is designed to deliver a healthy indoor climate while operating as efficiently as possible. Yet achieving that performance is about far more than fans, heat exchangers and control algorithms. Every day, thousands of service technicians and facility managers use the AHU’s interface, HMI, which ultimately determines how easily the unit can be installed, operated, commissioned, optimised and maintained. Here Fredrik Truedson, Product Manager, will explain why it is so important that the interface meets, or even exceeds, customer expectations.**

A modern interface is no longer simply a display. It is the primary connection between people and increasingly complex systems. A well-designed interface reduces the complexity of several actions or commands. In the world of air handling units, it means that the interface, the HMI, reduces commissioning time, minimises operational errors, improves troubleshooting and ultimately helps units, and hence buildings, to operate closer to or beyond their intended performance throughout their lifecycle.

As building services professionals rarely work under ideal conditions, it is important to understand what they expect from an interface, or HMI. Factors that can impact their view on needed functionalities or properties can be the characteristics of the commissioning process, extreme weather conditions, demanding time constraints and more.

To put this into perspective, construction sites are usually busy environments with multiple contractors working simultaneously, large amounts of documentation, complete or sometimes incomplete, and customer expectations that create time pressure throughout most of a project. In all this, an intuitive interface helps to complete tasks faster, make fewer mistakes, solve problems easier and support improved productivity, better building performance, lower lifecycle costs and more confidence among service technicians and facility managers.

**Listening to the daily users**

To better understand how professionals interact with the HMI of our GOLD air handling unit, we conducted a comprehensive user experience study.

It combined multiple research methods, including:

- In-depth interviews with professional users.
- On-site observations during commissioning and service work.
- UX expert review of the current interface.
- Competitor benchmarking.
- A survey involving 128 respondents across 18 countries.

Rather than focusing solely on opinions, the study explored how users perform everyday tasks such as commissioning, troubleshooting, servicing and configuration using the interface. Participants demonstrated their workflows, discussed their challenges and evaluated their confidence while using the system.

The result was a rich picture of how modern HVAC professionals work and what they expect from a contemporary HMI.

The HMI of our GOLD air handling unit achieved:

- 85% of respondents stated they would recommend the system to others.
- A System Usability Scale (SUS) score of 76, placing it comfortably above the industry average for software usability.
- A Net Promoter Score (NPS) of +59, indicating exceptionally strong user loyalty.
- Users reported an average confidence score of 6 out of 7 when completing common operational tasks.

**Simplicity creates confidence**

One of the strongest findings from the research was that both experienced and new users consistently felt confident while working with GOLD. This confidence stems from a clear information structure, logical navigation and familiar interaction patterns that help users to quickly understand where they are within the system.

In the world of HMIs, an intuitive interface reduces cognitive effort and allows engineers to concentrate on solving technical problems rather than understanding the software itself. Something that becomes particularly valuable considering the demanding environments and circumstances described earlier.

The study therefore reinforces an important principle: a successful HMI should reduce mental workload, not increase it.

---

*"Compared with other systems, it is very user-friendly."*

*"If the customer has no specific requirements, I always choose Swegon."*

*"Swegon feels like Ferrari compared with many competitors."*

Comments from professionals sharing their work and feedback in the user study

---

Although users expressed high satisfaction with the current GOLD HMI, the study also highlighted clear expectations for future development. Among else, professionals increasingly expect the same qualities from industrial systems that they experience in modern consumer technology.

**The GOLD gen. G updated HMI**

With all the above at hand, the recently launched new version of GOLD, generation G, is equipped with a newly updated HMI. The update incorporates modernised versions of the features mentioned in the study, as well as improvements identified during the research. At first glance, the HMI presents an updated but familiar user interface that retains its look and feel, making it instantly recognisable to existing users.

However, the new HMI offers far more than just a refreshed design:

- A new touchscreen and processor technology enables smoother user experience. The higher screen resolution improves readability, and immediate touch feedback enhances usability.
- Functions are organised according to user workflows, making them faster to find and easier to use.
- The interactive flowchart simplifies commissioning and settings.
- Easy access to guidance, information and alarms offers step-by-step support.
- A easy to use calendar function to manage operating times.
- A harmonised user interface, same view and workflows across hand-held terminal and web interface.
- The choice of light or dark mode ensures good visibility, depending on user preference and surroundings.

**An updated air handling unit, a new HMI**

The findings from this study reinforce two equally important conclusions.

First, the GOLD HMI has established itself as one of the industry's most intuitive and trusted interfaces. An achievement built over many years of continuous development.

Second, maintaining that leadership requires ongoing investment in usability, connectivity and intelligent functionality.

For Swegon, user experience is therefore not simply about interface design. It is about supporting the people who install, commission, operate and maintain GOLD air handling units every day. It is about enabling better commissioning. Better maintenance. Better energy performance. And ultimately, better buildings. Because even the most advanced air handling unit can only perform at its best when the people operating it are able to do the same.
