Swegon advances air handling units with recycled steel

Swegon is advancing a more resource-efficient and circular construction industry with the launch of the next-generation GOLD air handling unit, generation G. Designed to meet rising HVAC and building-sector demands, over 70% of the total steel weight is now represented by recycled steel and almost 60% of the total material weight is recycled material. As a result, the new unit - significantly reduces its embodied carbon while maintaining the performance and reliability expected of a GOLD unit.

The GOLD air handling unit has long been a well-established solution for several indoor climate applications. In this new generation, sustainability considerations have been integrated throughout the design, and the high share of recycled steel results in around 30% lower embodied carbon emissions compared with using traditional steel. This provides designers, installers, and property owners with a hands-on way to reduce environmental impact.

Alongside the material improvements, several technical developments support more efficient operation and simpler project planning. The new OptiFlow technology optimises airflow to improve energy performance. An extended size range provides greater flexibility in project design, and a split counterflow plate heat exchanger construction simplifies site entry and installation in confined spaces, a common challenge in both newbuild and refurbishment projects.

“We believe that sustainability must include both the daily energy performance and the lifecycle perspective. With interest growing in practical, ready to use solutions, this new generation of GOLD shows that meaningful change is already achievable. As the building industry continues to evolve, our goal is to offer products that combine the performance our customers expect with a clearly reduced environmental impact,” says Annika Sedwall, Business Development Director Configurable Air handling units at Swegon.

The new generation is also designed to work seamlessly within Swegon’s digital ecosystem. Energy360 is a comprehensive concept that gives users full control over energy use—from the configuration stage to daily operation. It provides clear insight into the air handling unit’s energy performance and operational status, enabling continuous optimisation throughout the product’s lifecycle. An updated hand terminal (HMI) will be introduced later in 2026, further enhancing usability.

As the construction and real estate sectors continue to adapt to increasing sustainability requirements, HVAC solutions play an important role in both operational efficiency and material impact. With the GOLD generation G, Swegon aims to offer a practical contribution to this transition: an air handling unit designed to support high-quality indoor environments while lowering the environmental footprint.

The new generation of GOLD is available as of today. Find out more here.
